Once upon a time, a pony and his mother lived together in a stable.

从前，一匹小马和妈妈住在马棚里。  

One day, mother asked him to carry a bag of wheat to the mill. He was very excited. He left home and ran towards the mill happily.   

一天，妈妈让他把麦子驮到磨坊去。他非常兴奋地出发了，高兴地向磨坊跑去。   

He saw an old cow eating grass on the bank. So he asked,“Excuse me,could you please tell me if I can cross the river?”   

不久，一条河挡住了他的去路。看着流淌的河水，小马不知道该怎么办了。

他看见一只老牛在河岸边吃草。于是问道：“打扰一下，请问，这条河我蹚能过去吗？”  

“Of course!”the cow said.“It’s not very deep.The water is just as high as my knees.”

“   当然！”老牛说，“这河不是很深。水才刚没过我的膝盖。”

Just then, a squirrel jumped down from the tree. He shouted to the pony,“Please don’t go! It’s too deep.You’ll get drowned! One of my friends got drowned in this river yesterday.”   

就在这时，一只松鼠从树上跳了下来，对小马喊道：“不要啊！水太深了。你会淹死的！昨天我的一个朋友就在这条河里淹死了。”

The pony stopped and thought for a while, he decided to go back home to ask his mother.   

小马停下来想了一会儿，他决定回家问问妈妈。   

When his mother heard this,she said to the pony,“My child, don’t always listen to others. You’d better try it by yourself, then you'll know what to do.”   

妈妈听了，对小马说：“我的孩子啊，不要总是听别人的话。你最好亲自尝试一下，然后你就会知道该怎么做了。”   

The pony ran to the river again. And he walked across the river carefully.   

小马又跑到河边，小心翼翼地蹚过河去。   

It turned out that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as deep as the squirrel described.   

原来，河水既不像老牛说的那样浅，也不像松鼠说的那样深。
